What Are The Symptoms Of Sinus Infection?

I had a sinus infection that started with cold symptoms on March 25, 2015 and by the weekend I knew I had a sinus infection but waited a few more days and then went to Urgent Care on April 2nd and MD thought I may have the start of pneumonia as well which I also thought I had too. I took Doxcycline (Not spelled correctly) 100 mg BID. That seemed to be breaking things up and started blowing yellow mucous. Then I missplaced the bottle with 5 remaining tablets. The wheezing and breathing was improving. I contacted urgent care to let them know I had lost the last 5 tablets and that I still couldn t smell or taste and so he switched me to Levaquin but the generic. I also used Flonase during time I had infection and used it up plus part of another bottle I had and took Mucinex with decongestant in it. March 30th was the last day I could taste anything. I can sometimes taste Wintergreen Life Savers, lemon drops, lemonade and my toothpaste but not anything else. I continue to feel a little stuffy at times, I have tenderness on each cheek when I press the sinus area. A CT scan from 2012 showed I had a retention cyst or polyp in the left maxillary. I saw an ENT yesterday and he said he didn t see any signs of infection, no polyp down in my nose and said my sense of smell may never come back or be the same as it was and that sinus infections can obliterate the sense of smell. He said he wouldn t count me out and said I should use the nasal spray for 3 months faithfully. I now am using NasaCort. He didn t think Prednisone would help my situation. I had heard of people having deep sinus infections that were missed by some MD s but one MD did DX this person with deep sinus infection. I am to see the ENT in 7 weeks and if still have the tenderness and feel puffy, then will discuss doing a CT scan. I can tell if something is sweet, salty, tart, tangy, etc which he said is usually the case. I also did salt water rinses during infection and some after I was off antibotic but have not continued any longer and he didn t think it would help with the smelling and tasting issue. t What is your opinion? What are the symtoms of a deep sinus infection and do need CT scan to find it? This is not fun. I have not started taking any other new medications. I did try acupuncture for three sessions. Today I could not taste a lemon drop but had been during the acupuncture. Thanks

Hi,

You appear to be having maxillary sinusitis. The main symptoms are pain over cheeks, eyes and nose, headache, sneezing, stuffiness, nasal discharge, loss of smell and taste. If not treated it may cause further complications and also spread. The symptoms of sinusitis may fluctuate depending on the flaring up of infection and also may depend on seasonal variations. I would advise you to go for surgical treatment if conservative treatment with medication fails. As of now I would recommend you to continue either Nasacort or Flonase as it will give you relief from few symptoms.

If there is a sign of an infection then you must take a long course of antibiotics in addition to above mentioned treatment. You may get signs of infection in the form of fever, greenish or yellowish nasal discharge etc. Please take steam inhalation on a regular basis twice a day. You may also take oral antihistamines like Avil or Cetirizine on a regular basis for few days. They make you drowsy so take necessary precautions while consuming it. This would help you a lot in getting rid of many symptoms. Getting back the sense of smell and taste can't be predicted and it may take weeks to get them back after a full recovery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
