What Are The Uses And Side Effects Of Augmentin?

My son is on Augmentin right now for a double ear infection. I was told today that they had a case of Whooping Cough at my childs caycare and he should be go and get on Erythromycin. My question is- Will the Augmentin be just as effective in preventing this if for some reason he was exposed?
