What Are The Withdrawal Symptoms Of Adderall?

I’m am currently taking Adderall for ADD and just moved to another state. I go to the VA for health care and the clinic closest to me does not prescribe this medication. I have refilled it at the Atlanta VA and plan on going back but it is a 2.5 hr drive. My question is what are the effects of abruptly stopping this medication? Also I was taking Bupropion to quit smoking and was told by the psychiatrist that this should work just as well as Adderall

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Adderall contains a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are central nervous system stimulants that affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. It is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). People who take large doses of Adderall for prolonged periods of time run the risk of becoming physically dependent on the drug. When this happens, a tolerance builds up. However, withdrawal from stimulants like Adderall often results in relatively mild physical symptoms that are unpleasant but not generally life-threatening. Prominent psychological dangers during withdrawal include including depression, anxiety and drug cravings. Symptoms of withdrawal from Adderall can begin anytime from hours or days after the last use. These symptoms may differ depending on the individual and their personal history of using Adderall. In general, it can be: Extreme fatigue, Sleep disturbances, Intense and vivid drug-related dreams, Hunger, Memory impairment, Drug cravings, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, Anxiety and Depression. Seek medical attention immediately when these symptoms continue to exist or becomes bothersome.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
