What Can Cause Brown Spots On The Skin?

i had stored some of my belongings in a basement of a friend a few years ago. I noticed a few days later that i had a few round brown spots on my abdomen. I went you a doctor because they did not go away. The doctor looked at it and said it was fungal. Over the last few years it comes and goes. Especially if i am warm or sweaty. Its on my back breasts and abdomen. Most of the time its brown in color but can be red. Its not itchy. Not sure if it is fungal and how to get rid of it. I have tried antifungal powders and creams. Any ideas?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Perhaps you have Pityriasis versicolor. It is a superficial fungal infection of the skin of oil rich glands like chest, shoulders, upper abdomen. The condition presents as brown or tan patches and is more common in warm and humid weather conditions. I suggest you to take an oral antifungal e.g either itraconazole or fluconazole for a week. In addition I suggest you to apply a topical antifungal e.g ketoconazole cream, twice daily for 2 weeks. If the condition is recurrent I suggest you to use an antifungal body wash e.g ketoconazole lotion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
