What Can Cause Inflamed Clitoris During Periods?

I just started my period earlier today, but have also noticed that my clitoris is red/inflammed, itching, and (upon looking closely) there are small tissue-like substances in it. Attempted to remove as much as possible, but it still hurts. What could this be?? .....Found out last week I had really bad inflammed tonsillitis too. Don t think it has anything to do with this situation, but has gotten better with medication.
