Hi Doctor. I have been having a warm feeling in my upper chest a moderate sore throat and hoarseness in my voice. When I speak or take a deep breath I feel the urge to cough because it feels like a tickle in my throat. My throat is very dry and cannot be quenched with water. The hoarseness has been ongoing in for several months. My internist doesn’t seem to be concerned but I just feel something is not right.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of dry and sore throat which is due to upper respiratory tract infection.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you to do gargles with warm saline water and drink plenty of fluid to keep your self hydrate. Take ibuprofen (if not allergic ) or acetaminophen for pain and inflammation and take over the counter antihistamine like benadryl. Usually virus complete its course , so drugs are given to relief symptoms. If symptoms persist or get worse then you should consult ENT specialist for proper examination and to rule out conditions like acid reflux and bacterial infection. Doctor may order blood test or throat swab test to confirm diagnosis . He/she may prescribe decongestants , antibiotics/antiviral depending upon your condition. Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances , do warm saline rinses and carbonated beverage.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
