What Can Explain Severe Pain In Thigh Area?

My 6 year old son is experienceing pretty severe pain in his right thigh area. He is unable to walk without feeling like he is going to lose his balance. He has a difficult time putting any weight on that leg. What could this be? He did not fall or get hit with anything.
