What Casues Excessive Weight Loss While On Lamotrigine?

My epileptic son takes lamotrigine for seizure prevention. He recently broke his jaw. It s wired. I m feeding him highly nutritious liquids but he s lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks. He s 6 1 and is now at 180 pounds. Someone said to give him hawthorn for heart risk from rapid weight loss and gelatin for extra protein. Just concerned of warnings and interactions. I don t take it lightly to give him prescription or natural remedies. Thoughts? Concerns?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,

Lamotrigine is relatively safer drug if metabolic side effects are considered. But in some individuals the drug can cause loss of weight. Since he is taking the drug for treatment of seizure disorder so its not advisable to reduce the dose or to change the drug.

His nutrition can be improved. He should take high protein and high carb diet in order to increase the weight. He can take protein without worries. There are no serious drug interactions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
