What Cause Severe Menstrual Cramps?

all of a sudden this last month I had horrible menstrual cramps. Never had anything more than mild discomfort before. For about 12 hours I thought I had appendicitis or something, but it was down low in my uterus. I am 30 and have had 2 kids, my youngest is 2 1/2.
