What Causes BP To Spike Despite Taking Medication After Alcohol Consumption?

I m a 50 year old woman, that can lose a few pounds. My bp spiked today 180/147. I did have drinks last night. I take 100mmg Losartan and 5mg Amlodipine for a year now. I took .5mg Xanax this afternoon to try to lower bp. Odd that bp is still not going down. On good days, my bp can be 130/90. Do you think it spiked because of one to many drinks last night?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that it is related to the alcohol use.

If it was due to anxiety, the use of the xanax to help relax you would help but otherwise xanax would not effectively help to lower blood pressure.

If it remains elevated then you need to consider seeing your doctor for review because your medication may need to be altered to achieve better control.
The amlodipine can increase to 10 mg or another medication can be added.

I hope this helps
