What Causes HPV Infection After Removal Of Mirena?

I am a 46 year old woman. I had an IUD removed a couple of months ago; since then, I have had a bladder infection, inflammation, dry brittle hair along with hair loss, and a recent pap that just tested positive for HPV. What s happening to me? I ve been in a monogamous relationship for 11 years.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is quite common sexually transmitted infection (STI). Majority of sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives.
Common mode of spread is during vaginal or anal intercourse. HPV can be passed even when an infected person has no signs or symptoms.
You also can develop symptoms years after you have intercourse with someone who was infected. Thus it makes it hard to know when you first became infected.
IUD devices will only prevent pregnancy and does not have any role in preventing STIs.
In most cases, HPV infection subsides on its own and does not cause any health problems. In case the infection persists, it causes problems like genital warts and cancer.
The best way to prevent its infection is using condoms during intercourse.
There is no treatment available to eradicate virus. However, there are treatments for the health problems that HPV can cause.
Since your PAP smear is positive, you need to be careful regarding cervical cancer it could cause. You need a regular follow up by means of PAP smear and Per speculum examination to know the status of your cervix.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
