General & Family Physician 's  Response
Klebsiella oxytoca is a gram negative bacterium mainly responsible for colitis and sepsis. These are present on mucosal surfaces which can transmit to lungs and can cause destructive changes. It can also cause gi tract and urinary tract infections. The infection commonly occurs as hospital acquired or when the body immunity is low.
Proper antibiotic coverage is necessary as there is a chance of antibiotic resistance and viremia leading to septic shock. Cefotaxime, amikacin, moxifloxacin etc have a role to combat this infection.
