My 95 year-old father has CHF and has just recovered from shingles followed by a UTI. As a result, he is lying down more, and only gets up to void and eat . However, he basically only wants orange juice. We mix it with other blended juices (mango, banana, strawberry) but at this point, he has almost stopped eating any solid foods and is losing weight. Maybe we can persuade him to have 3 bites of scrambled eggs, or some flan, or tiramisu, or a Lindt chocolate ball. As you can see, it is all sweet. He is refusing to eat soups and doesn t like mashed potatoes. So we have started to make smoothies with protein powder, bananas, and fresh fruits. But the new symptom, is after he sips his oj, there is a tremendous amount of phlegm, less with the smoothies, but there is still a lot of phlegm, that he spits up. What can we do to reduce the phlegm and to try to increase his calorie intake?
