What Causes Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia?

My cousin has a rare genetic cancer that sounds like Walderston. Not sure of spelling. It is a cancer that is carried by a genetic gene that runs in a family line. It is a cancer that can remain dormant sometimes for long periods of time. Till something triggers it. It can affect different places in the body. Hers has affected her lungs where it has made masses of tumors on her lungs. She said it is a very rare cancer that runs in our family line. She has inherited the gene from both her mother and fathers line where it shows in both. I wanted to find out as much as I can because she feels like this needs to be made known to other family members. My father had colon cancer, l sister had stomach cancer, l had lung cancer, l uncle ended up with the cancer attacking his body after a hip replacement and l sister died in her early 50 s from a blood cancer. Do you know if I am spelling this right. She said is a something like Walderston cancer.

Oncologist 's  Response
Hi,

Scientists have learned how certain changes in the DNA inside normal lymphocytes can make them become lymphoma or multiple myeloma cells. Changes in the DNA of some lymphoma cells can also cause them to make high levels of IgM, which leads to most of the symptoms of WM.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Monish De, Oncologist
