What Causes A Bump Leading To Intense Pain On Left Vagina?

I just had a baby two weeks ago. Recently I can feel a lump that causes quite a bit of throbbing pain to the left of my vagina under the skin in the muscle area where kegal excercises are done. I m really scared that I have PN damage or have done long term damage to Levitor Ani muscle. I do not have incontinence, and ibuprofen helps in addition to ice packs. Will this lump and subsequent pain and resolve itself naturally, or should I be concerned and seek out additional treatment right away?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Having a painful lump in the vagina after birth is not an unusual concern, and fortunately there is nothing about it that indicates you have any kind of muscle or perineal damage.

The most likely diagnosis is the development of a hematoma under your skin. A hematoma is caused by having some bleeding under the skin of the vagina. This happens most commonly in or near areas where you may have received stitches after your delivery. It causes a lump of clotted blood to form under the skin that cannot drain, which causes pain and swelling.

Fortunately, hematomas go away on their own over time. To help the pain, you are doing the right thing with ice packs and ibuprofen. If the lump starts to get bigger and more painful, you should see your OB back to examine the area and see if it needs to be drained.

Again, I want to reassure you that, especially because you have no problems with fecal or urinary incontinence, there is no reason to suspect you have any type of perineal injury. A women's body is designed to heal from childbirth, and i assure you, at 6 weeks postpartum you will be amazed how much your body has returned to the state it was in before the baby.

I hope I was able to answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
