What Causes A Bump On The Knee Cap After An Injury?

Walking the dog, two hours ago, I took a had fall n my knee. I came home, elevated it and iced it for 20 minutes. I noticed that about a half hour later, I had a large bump just below the patella. I have stayed off it and am icing again. Should I go to the emergency ward to have it x-rayed? Please advise! Thanks!

Hi,

The lump that brings up puss might be due to several causes and the first to consider is skin. Sometimes an infection of the root of the hair (hair follicle) might get infected and cause the itchiness sensation and bring up puss. Different hair follicles might get infected time after time and that might be the reason you get that repeatedly.

The follicle infection is generally self-limited, which means there is no need for specific treatment for it but if it is bothersome than antibiotics might be used.
1. Local antibiotics like Fusidic Acid might be a good choice.
2. If no improvement in 2-3 days then it would be a good idea to use oral antibiotics (Augmentin is a great option but if allergic to Penicillin than it is best to use Clarithromycin).
3. Local warm compresses might help with inflammation being localized on the lesion and bring pus out easier.
4. Keep good hygiene of the area and wash hands well after every time you touch or take care of the area.

Very rarely the cause would come from underneath the skin. I would recommend you to send a picture or two also to have a better understanding of the cause and best treatment for it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
