a five minute bout of coughing7 hours ago from a deep chest cold is causing unbearable pain and burning in my throat and lungs and terrible earache. Should I go to the ER? I have been gargling, used Vicks on my chest and around my nose. 10 on a pain scale

You are having terrible chest pain and you have mentioned it as very severe. So yes, you should immediately consult the pulmonologist. Provide me any medical history like asthma if present for giving further comment.

Your work up done should be as follows:
-Auscultation
-CBC
-Chest x ray
-Spirometry if needed for further work up
