What Causes A Child To Masturbate Compulsively?

The daughter of patient and friend of mine , age 6, masturbate compulsively ,at school as well ,to the point that the teacher has called the mother to ask her to address the issue. I am a gynecologist.I have seen the little girl, I know her well. She is quite normal, she says that she cannot help doing it.The mother says that she noticed that she does it more when she stressed. Do you think there would be any value in trying an SSRI like Paxil in such a case? Regards, Loretta Marcon

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

It is a sensitive topic, mainly because we cannot try techniques through which masturbation would carry a scar or omen throughout her life which can even affect her future sexual life completely.

Indtead your approach of treating the stress would be more fruitful, but the course should be a short one and extremely well monitored. Whilst on the course, try to help her with other modalities of stress management.

Best of luck.
