It is because of food regurgitation. I will explain you in detail. When ever we eat our glottis (airway entry to lungs at pharynx) is closed and the solid/liquid food is pushed towards esophagus (food pipe). This food pipe propels solid/liquid food to stomach. The esophagus has two sphincters at its lower and upper end. These sphincters stops food regurgitating in pharynx and mouth.
In some people sometimes these sphincter may go weak and result in regurgitation of acidic liquid from stomach to esophagus and pharynx which may further go to upper respiratory tract causing severe local inflammatory reaction, and secretions which incites a cough reflex.
You may consult a good physician who may prescribe you some Proton pump inhibitor medicines and gastric pro-kinetic drug with good relief.
