What Causes A Dark Brown Discharge In Menstruation?

It is my first time being on birth control and I just started nuvaring. I have been having a dark brown discharge for the past week. My last period just ended on this past Friday ( or should have started that friday before), is that normal. I should be ending my first nuvaring cycle next Thursday, to get my period again? Will this discharge stop with more time on the ring?
