What Causes A Dark Spot On The Lower Lip Along With Swelling?

I have a small, dark spot on my lower lip that appeared about 3 1/2 to 4 weeks ago. When I look at it, it does not appear to be directly on the surface of the lip. It does look symmetrical. I do not have any visually noticeable swelling of the lip, however, I feel as though my lip is swollen or occasionally tingly. I would not say that it is painful, simply uncomfortable and difficult to ignore. My lips have also been slightly chapped, so I have been applying chapstick. The chapped lips have subsided, but the dark spot and tingling sensation have continued. I am a 30-year-old male, and I am also a smoker. Naturally, due to this poor habit, I immediately assume the worst. There are no additional spots or patches in my mouth, and I have no swollen glands. That may be neither here nor there. I have taken ibprofuen for the swelling feeling, and this does seem to reduce the symptom. Any idea what this could possibly be? My google results produce a lot of terrifying images and dismal outlooks. However, nothing I have read includes anything involving lip sensations.

I appreciate any thoughts until I am able to schedule an appointment with a doctor.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

A dark spot on the lower lip that is not painful but uncomfortable and makes the lip tingly can be an inflamed and hypertrophied oil gland also known as a Sebaceous gland.
Chapped lips, infection and smoking all can be contributing factors for the same..
Smoking can cause continuous irritation that can lead to inflammation and increase in size of the glands.
Other causes can be cyst formation..
But as you are a smoker we cannot exclude malignant lumps without proper investigation..
So it is advisable to consult an Oral Physician or an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and if needed you can be advised a Biopsy for further diagnosis..
As of now you can do cool compresses over the lump and continue taking Ibuprofen.
Avoid smoking as it can cause exaggeration of the symptoms..

Hope this information helps you.

Regards.
