What Causes A Delayed Menstrual Period?

I was supposed to start my period on thursday and its tuesday and I still havent started. I found a tampon in me tonight that apparently had gotten lost and i dont know how long its been in there. I also just switched birth control pills and just finished my second pack. Could i be pregnant?
