What Causes A Delayed Period Despite A Negative Pregnancy Test?

My periods are overdue by ten days. The home pregnancy test done today morning came negative. I have never had a missed or a delayed period except when i became pregnant with my two kids. I detected the pregancy both times with the help of the HPT kit. pls tell me what could be the delay for the onset of periods this time.
