What Causes A Feeling Of Slipping Sensation While Walking?

Hi - I am a 62 yr old woman. I have lost 80 lbs since May 2015. I walk 3 miles a day 3 - 5 days a week. Yesterday and today I occasionally have a feeling I ve stepped on something giving me a sensation of going to slip. I don t get dizzy. I checked my shoes, there was nothing on them. This happens on concrete and pavement. I m going to try a different pair of shoes tomorrow but thought I d ask if there s an explanation as it s an odd feeling. Thank you.

Hi,

You might be having mild ataxic gait in which a person tends to slip or get off the balance while walking. The best check would be Tandem gait (walking on a straight line e.g. line between tiles or in the pattern on the carpet, where the toes of the back foot touch the heel of the front foot at each step for at least 9 meters). This gait is a sensitive test of early ataxia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
