What Causes A Feeling Of Strangulation In The Neck?

Hi, my name is Elizabeth. I was wondering how small amounts of pressure around a neck (stranglation) would effect a human body over a long period of time. I adopted a ball python 6 months ago (I love her very much) she is 3 ft 6 long and healthy (strong). I let her rest on my shoulder during handling. Normally there is no issue. I have noticed that when her scales move on my skin it creates friction (pulls the skin a bit). This can be a little tight when she is trying to move around my neck and gets stuck due to the friction. I am perfectly capable of taking her off when I want to so that s not a problem. I just want to know for the few seconds she is tight (I can still breath) around my neck. If over time (she will live an average of 20 more years) will it effect me negatively. And should I be concerned about that? If so I can always hold her a different way.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Human airway is supported strong enough for such little forces. If you don't feel very uncomfortable, or you don't suffocate, then you should not worry.

There is no evidence to say it would be causing you in harm in long terms until the pressure is too much suffocating you or damaging your skin which you can easily feel and see for.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
