What Causes A Fit Of Cough Followed By Breathlessness?

I am female, 50 years old. My daughter is 15. We both have a deep cough that started about a month ago. The coughing goes for about 15 or 20 seconds followed by breathlessness and panic to breath. Mine happens several times a day, hers is usually at night. She is worried this will happen to her at school.
