What Causes A Knot And Muscular Pain In Outer Thigh?

I have a knot about 1/4 inch deep on my right outer thigh. Today, I have had muscular type pain shooting up that same thigh. I have not done anything strenous, am obese and live a pretty sedentary lifestyle. Could this be a blood clot, or not likely since on the outer thigh?
