What Causes A Large Bump And Pain At Back Of Head After A Injury?

My 7 yr old son fell over backwards at school and hit head on concrete playground. Has nasty big bump and graze but no open wound. Did not lose consciousness, no signs of concussion but he complains that head hurts when coughing. Could he have blood vessel damage in brain? No other symptoms. Please advise.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear patient your son has got extracranial hemorrhage and hematoma formation. This is bleeding from skull vessels due to trauma and it collects outside skull and appears as swelling. Is he having headache or giddiness? If yes then ct scan of head plain SOS contrast should be done to rule out intracranial bleeding. Swelling takes time to disappear. Apply ice packs frequently and take tab diclofenac plus serratiopeptodase combination twice a day for pain and swelling relief. If there is abrasion short course of antibiotics is also required. You need consult expert general surgeon for examination. all the best.
