What Causes A Large Knot At The Base Of Neck Despite Having High BP And LVH?

I was having chest pains shortness of breath then dizzyness, followed by headache. I when to cardiologist was diagnosed with high blood pressure and LVH. I have been taking HB medicine for three weeks and doing much better. I had forgotten about this large knot/swollen area at the base of my neck. I showed up right at the begining of my feeling my heart problems. The knot still hurts sometimes, but has become softer to the tough (before was extremly hard) since taking HB meds. I can now feel something hard in it but when I rub on it I begin to have pains running up my neck then pains in the side of my head. It is on the right side. Is this something I should have checked out quickly or is it ok to just check with my family doctor?

Hi,

There seems no direct correlation between knot at the base of neck & high BP with LVH. Therefore it may be taken as a separate entity, as for its occurrence and treatment is concerned. If you have a knot in your neck, most of the times, it means that some of the muscle fibers are continually contracting. This can cause neck pain, that feels dull, achy or sharp.

The pain may occur in knot or nearby area like shoulder or arm. Also, other symptoms in the neck often include a hard sensitive bump, tenderness, tightness & even presence of headache. Usually poor postures, mental or emotional stress, physical inactivity, repetitive overuse of muscles as well as prolonged sitting or lying are some of the reasons, which may cause surrounding muscle of neck to become tense and hence may present as a knot in the neck.

Usually self care treatment may solve the problem, most of the times. These are:
1 - Trigger point self massage involving pressing the knot to relax the tight muscle fibers.
2 - Use of ice pack to reduce the inflammation in and around the knot.
3 - Use of warm water cloth compresses may result in soothing and relaxing the tight muscles.
Out of no. 2 and 3 ,you can use, whichever gives you more relief. Even alternate use of ice pack and heat compresses may be more useful.
4 - Certain physical exercises like shoulder shrugging, head to hand neck release, certain yoga postures like cat-cow posture or cobra posture etc. under guidance of your health care provider/physiotherapist may be helpful.
5 - OTC analgesics / anti-inflammatory medications may also help in management of pain and swelling.

However, if above measures do not seem effective or the symptoms become more agonizing, then you are advised to see your doctor for proper evaluation and treatment done accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
