Hello,

Your husband sprained his ankle and has a large lump on the right side, the other side is also swollen. Commonly swelling, pain and bruising can continue even after one week of ankle sprain, depending on the severity of injury. Formation of ankle lump may be indicative of ankle dislocation, fracture in the lower leg, foot or ankle, hematoma, etc. You are suggested to get your husband clinically examined by an orthopedic surgeon, get X-ray, CT, MRI done to detect bone fracture, tendon /ligament tear that may be causing the symptoms.

Sometimes, swelling is indicative of fracture, he may need correction and plaster done. In case it is tear of tendon or ligament, ankle wrap or ankle brace may be helpful, do not wrap it tightly. Wrap it in such a way that the ankle is comfortable and is at rest. He is suggested to avoid walking or take the help of a walker so that he does not put any weight on the affected ankle. To reduce pain and swelling he can take Combiflam or Naproxen, one when needed.

He should keep the leg elevated on a stool while sitting or on pillow when on bed. The treating Orthopedic may prescribe diuretics to reduce swelling. Diuretics should be taken only after examination by your local doctor and when it is prescribed by your local doctor. He should avoid taking salty food & should not take extra salt. He can take home made food with normal salt content.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

I recommend performing an X-ray study of the ankle and consulting with an orthopedist. It may need special immobilization.
