What Causes A Large Ulcer In Mouth After Undergoing Root Canal?

I got a larger ulcer in my mouth after my last root canal and finally got it cleared up, now I had problems with my tooth and they redid my root canal and now I have three that are very painful and getting worse, they're on the opposite side of my tooth but wonder if it's from the anesthesia and what I can do to get rid of them

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The ulcers you mention in query occur due to allergic reaction , because of two reasons :-

- Allergy to benzocaine in anesthesia .

- Material used in root canal like formaldehyde and gutta percha .

I would suggest you to :-

- Take over the counter anti histamine drug like benadryl .

- Apply tree tea oils on them .

- Take ibuprofen (if not allergic) or acetaminophen for pain and discomfort.

- Do warm saline rinses twice daily .

If the allergy is due to formaldehyde this will go in few days by its own , because it is a volatile substance .

If ulcers persist for more then week then consult oral pathologist . Doctor will examine physically to rule out infection . Doctor may prescribe another anti allergic like zyrtec or steroid ointment .

If it is due to infection then doctor will prescribe antibiotics or may extract tooth.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
