What Causes A Light Discharge Instead Or A Period?

I have been tring to get pregnant. I was supose to start my period this past week, but instead of having a normal period I have a brown colored discharge that is very light in amount instead. I took a EPT test and it came back negative. Can I still be pregnant? Should I be worried?
