What Causes A Lump Above The Collarbone?

About 3 months ago I had very sore lymph node under my right arm, it went away after about a week. Then I had a swollen lymph node at the base of my skull right side, it went away after a week. Then I had a swollen lymph node on my neck right side. All during this time, I had no fever. Then on June 19th I woke up with a painful lump on my left clavicle where it meets the sternum. Next day went to the family doctor. He was very concerned that I might have Lymphoma and did a CBC, nothing showed up, but he still sent me to a hematologist for safety sake. Hemotoligist had more blood work done, CT Scan. Nothing showed up but said I had many swollen lymph nodes in my neck, thought maybe due to a sinus infection. As the lump on my left clavicle is still there, he sent me for an Xray, more blood work and 24 hour urine test. Urine test revealed I have protein in my urine, but doctor did not seem concerned about that. Nothing show in the Xray. Now Hemotoligist has given me a 10 day course of Citpro and said to come back in 4 months. He said no cancer is showing up in the tests. I am still very concerned about the lump it feels hard like bone. My father had renal cancer and they did not discover it, even though he had blood tests, xrays and CT scan, until they did the MRI. They removed the kidney and also found the cancer had spread to his rib bone. My mother had breast cancer. I m under the impression that cancer can be detected by the MRI even though the other tests don t show anything wrong. Doctor had a hard time getting the CT scan approved. Af

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

In most cases, this is just a swollen lymph node which doesn't require any specific treatment. Also, considering your description this may be some other benign subcutaneous lesion such as lipoma, fibroma or atheroma and if there are no skin changes such as redness, pus discharge or pain and fever then you should not be worried since it can be easily surgically removed under local anesthesia.
Then there are doubts it can be sent to the patohistologic analysis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
