What Causes A Lump At The Base Of The Skull?

Hi! So within the last week I have noticed a lump of sorts at the base of my skull, just offset from spine to telhe right. I read everywhere that is the location of the occipital lymph nodes, but am not sure. The past couple days, that area has felt tight and I get pains on that side of my head, wrapping around the top to behind the right eye. There pain ranges from tension headache to just a dull, occasional blip of pain. The lump is noticeable by feeling around in the area. Additional information, I have been suffering from what I would describe as hearing loss and ringing in my right ear the past 2 weeks. I have dealt with a clogged ear in the past and it just cleared up over time. However, with the discovery of this bump in that location, could these two issues be related? If so, how worried should I be? And suggestions on home treatment? I do realize seeing a doctor would be the preferred route here, but simply looking for some quick info to ease my mind in the meantime. Thank you!

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Lump at base of the skull is likely to be enlarged lymph nodes.
I suggest you get aspiration cytology from the lump to assess the type of cells in the lesion.
Headache could be associated with the lump.
Hearing loss and ringing in ears require an ENT consultation.

I suggest you get an audiometry test to assess the hearing.
Ringing in ears and clogging of ears could be due to infection in ear.
I suggest you consult an ENT specialist for clinical assessment, relevant investigations and thus treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
