What Causes A Lump On Back Of Neck With History Of Having A Fractured Cervical Collar?

I found, maybe 2 months ago, a lump on the back of my neck (around c2 area, slightly off center to the right) that I am really concerned about. Last summer I fractured my c5 and c6 vertebrae and work a cervical collar (rigid) which left my neck really stiff. I am prone to muscle knots in my neck, which I can usually work out with relative ease but this is very hard and has not been responsive to stretching or light massage. I know the c2 is palpable so I am wondering if maybe I am just feeling that and hadn t noticed before, or maybe bone spurs? I am very worried. Please give me guidance.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, transverse process of C 2 would not be palpable as a lump in general except mild elevation over the skin surface. Various possibilities for the narrated lump can be:
- Soft tissue lesion as sebaceous cyst or lipoma
- Old hematoma from previous injury, manifesting at a later date as the collection gets organised and reach the skin layers
- Others

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
