What Causes A Lump On The Arm After Carrying A Heavy Object?

I am a wildlife photographer. Tonight I was handholding my heaviest lens and went to lay it across my forearm (which I regularly do) to walk with it -- it came down hard on my arm and I noticed soon after a big lump, very sore. Now it is bruised too and quite tender. I expected the bruise but not the lump... I m icing it now though this happened several hours ago. Is that the best thing to do? Is the lump normal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of carrying on a heavy camera lens on forearm which fell on it and thus got swelling and bruise.
The cause is obviously the fall of lens on forearm causing the vein to rupture thus causing the swelling along with the bruise.
The treatment is wait and watch.
You should have put on a tight dressing immediately on appearance of the swelling and/or bruise, now it will not work.
Take an anti-inflammatory medicine like Ibuprofen if it suits you.
Wait and watch.
Take care not to traumatize it again.
No need to worry as this is self-limiting.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
