What Causes A Metallic Taste In The Mouth After Taking Clindamycin?

I have had six bouts of cellulitis. The last one started on the 29th May. I am on clindamycin, four times a day for 18 days and then I have to go on them for life, one a day. However, I have this metalic taste in my mouth since I started taking the tablets. Should I go back to my doctor?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have symptoms of metallic taste in the mouth after taking Clindamycin which is one of the most common side effect of taking Clindamycin. Intravenous as well as oral intake will cause this side effect. In most of individuals the bad taste goes away in some weeks. One of main reasons for bad taste in mouth is high dose of drug, but as body becomes tolerant to doses, side effects go away in some weeks.

Need not to worry about it. Use sugar free mint gums. Drink plenty of water, lime juices. This will help in reducing the side effects. There is no need to take one more medicine for that. put few drops of lime on tongue to stimulate taste buds.

If your symptoms keeps on persisting visit your doctor to get your antibiotic changed. Your symptoms will resolve soon.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
