What Causes A Painful Bump On The Head After An Injury?

I'm72 and fell backward about a week and a half ago I have a bump on the back upper side of my head that hasn't gone away. I put ice on it after it happened and the bump went down. I can't sleep on that side because it does hurt some. Should I be worried?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

All the symptoms you have mentioned suggest the possibility of a hematoma. It is nothing but a collection of blood under the tissues following a blunt trauma.
You don't need to worry regarding this as it is a harmless condition and it will goes away by few days. Since you are little bit older it takes more time for complete resolution pain persist for a longer period.
Your lump got resolved and the only thing that matters you is pain. You can try the following for symptomatic relief.
(1)- Apply ice packs over the affected area,it will reduce the pain and fasten the recovery.
(2)- You can take analgesics like tramadol or acetaminophen for pain.
(3)- Counter irritants ointments like diclo gel can be applied for pain.

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards,
Dr.Shinas
