What Causes A Painful Lump In The Breast?

Hi, I woke up this morning with a painful lump in my right breast just behind my nipple. The area where the lump is swollen a bit and is very very painful. Previously i have had a small amount of discharge in my bra from my nipple but never thought anything of it. The discharge is still there and is a brownish colour. What should I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Any lump in the breasts needs to be properly investigated so I would recommend you to see your doctor and have it checked.
If you are under 30 years of age the doctor might also ask for an ultrasound and 30-40 years of age an ultrasound or a mammograme can be ordered and over 40 years of age a mammograme might be ordered.
These will help visualize the breast tissue and identify the cause of the lesion.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj,
