What Causes A Painful Lump In The Groin?

i am a male aged 50 and think i have a hernia. I woke up coughing last night and felt a lump in my groin area i pushed it back but after bathing tonight i could see the lump. It is not painful but feels like a dull ache could you please let me know what action i should take
