What Causes A Painful Lump On The Breast Of A 9 Year Old Girl?

Hello. My little sister has a lump under her right breast. She is only nine years old. Its right under her areola inside her breast. She says it really hurts. Her left breast is fine though. Is this just her breast developing or something to be concerned about.

Hi,

It is suggestive of pre-pubertal changes. Based on the given history your younger sister seems to have a small lump on the right breast with tenderness beneath the nipple is a normal part of puberty. This may be the first sign of puberty in a girl. One breast may start developing before the other, sometimes even 6 months before the other. In the beginning, it may hurt sometimes and be tender when touched. There is nothing to worry as it usually subsides after 4 to 6 weeks. Other causes may include breast trauma or infection, lipomastia or hemangioma.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
