I AM 64 YEARS OLD. FOUND A LARGE LUMP AT THE TOP OF MY CHEST THAT IS PAINFUL IF SOMETHING TOUCHES IT LIKE A SEAT BELT. DR PRESCRIBED STEROIDS THAT HASN T HELPED. IT IS INFLAMED MOST OF THE TIME. DR IS SENDING ME TO A CARDIOLOGIST FOR TESTS. I AM NOT EXPERINCING ANY CHEST PAIN OR HEART RELATED SYMPTOMS. WHAT COULD THIS POSSIBLY BE?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If you have a tender red area on the upper chest it can be costochondritis (inflammation of the joint between the rib and the chest), it can be an epidermoid cyst or a local infection.

You may need to use ibuprofen 600-800 mg every 6-8 hours after food, local antibiotic cream such as mupirocin 2-3 times a day. If you are not better in 2-3 days or you notice any worsening you will have to have the painful lump with your doctor again.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
