What Causes A Painful Lump On The Left Side Of The Throat?

half inch back from top tooth on left side in throat I have a knot, hard like bone, a little painful at night depending how sleep, hurts some at daytime to, sometimes it gets bigger and swells, been like this for six months. Went to VA to get checked, will be seeing ENT Dr soon, worried wish I had an idea what it is

It could be a lymph node or a lateral neck cyst. Both are harmless, but it is relevant to have an ENT doctor look at it.
