What Causes A Painfully Swollen Big Toe?

I broke my left leg on Christmas Eve and have had to sleep on my back a lot since then. Since my left leg was injured, I have been using the big toe on my right foot to lift the weight of the sheet and comforter up off of my left foot. Today when I woke up, I found that the big toe on my right foot was hurting and had become red and swollen. Is there something I should do to relieve this condition, or do I just have to wait for it to heal itself?

Hello, Thanks for the query.
I have gone through the contents. It is possible that due to excessive workload put on the big toe, it has got inflamed and hence the swelling and pain. But there is also a possibility of an acute gout attack, which invariably begins in the big toe. So my suggestion is get your blood uric acid tested, if it is high, then possibility of gout has to be considered. In the mean time you can take a pain killer like Ibuprofen for immediate pain relief. Thanks.
