What Causes A Person To Be Bedridden With The Feeling Of Demise?

My dad 58, smoked most of his life has been off cigarettes 6 years, had a widowmaker heart attack 9 years ago (42% heart dead), worked in the coal fired power plant in contact with fly ash for 30 years (retired this year), has COPD, Emphysema, has been prescribed too much medicine for the past three years (2 aggranox, 1 pristiq, (4)-1mg xanax, (4)-6 350mg somas, (4)-5mg oxycodone, (4)-5mg hydrocodone, 40mg crestor) a day^ his body built up a tolerance for these drugs after three years and he was buying more xanax and pain pills until he snapped from withdraws and was involuntarily committed where he went through detox and had a stroke. He has had several mini strokes since then. He says he is dying and wants to be bedridden all day everyday. My mom thinks it s all in his head and wants him to get out of bed, my question to you is this.. Is that a realistic expectation of someone with his health problems? How long do people live like this typically? Should we encourage him to get out of the bed or would that lead to his demise due to the strain on his body?

Hi,

It sounds like your father is dealing with multiple health issues, which can be overwhelming and difficult to manage. It is not uncommon for individuals with chronic health conditions to experience feelings of hopelessness or despair, which can lead to a desire to withdraw from daily activities and become bedridden.

It is important to work with healthcare providers to address your father's health concerns and develop a plan for managing his symptoms. This may involve adjusting his medications, providing supportive care, and addressing any underlying mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.

Encouraging your father to engage in activities that he enjoys and that is within his physical capabilities, such as light exercise or socializing with friends and family, can help improve his overall well-being and quality of life. However, it is important to respect his wishes and not force him to do anything he is not comfortable with.

The prognosis for individuals with multiple chronic health conditions can vary widely, depending on the severity of the conditions and how well they are managed. It is important to work closely with healthcare providers to monitor his health and manage his symptoms and to provide emotional support and understanding to help him cope with his health challenges.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
