What Causes A Popping Sound On Wriggling My Toe?

for the past couple of days now , and whenever i wriggle my big toe on my right foot , i can feel a popping sensation near the metatarsal on the big toe , what could this be. i have heard it could be torn cartilage ? can you help ? Also , if i press on the metatarsal and move my toe at the same time , you can feel it popping !
