What Causes A Prolonged Menstrual Period While On Birth Control Pills?

I recently started taking a birth control pill, started about a month ago. My period came a week late and has been lasting for about 7 days now without decreasing in heaviness. It doesn't look like it'll stop anytime soon and is really really heavy. Is there anything I can do? Is this normal?
