What Causes A Prolonged Menstrual Period?

i am 34 yrs old had not had a periods for 8 mths.when to dr.she give me 10 pills to start my cycle.which i got.then next mths i got my cycle but i have not stop .i am going on two mths of non stop.i am getting worry .what could be wrong.aslo i do not have any kids.
