What Causes A Prolonged Period While On Depo Shot?

I was taking the depot shot birth control, I started having my period, and it is going on 4 months non stop now. I only had the shot once and I didn't go back for my second round because of the awful side affects. Will my period stop soon, and if it doesn't am I in danger?
