What Causes A Purple Discolored Lump On The Waist?

I crashed headfirst into a mailbox, a few fractured ribs, (2 1/2 weeks ago). My left side, where I must have fell on (I was unconscious and awoke in hospital), was purple with a 5 or 6 inch long lump in the waste area . When I touch it, the skin burns. It has slowly decreased with time and ice, sports cream, but it seems strange because I don t know what it is. Could it be one of my displaced ribs slid down towards my waste area??

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Possibility it may be hematoma due to veins injury or it may be due to infection.

If it is ribs fracture you may not recover this much earlier.

Use cold and warm compression, use pain killer medication.

If you have doubt then take one chest X-ray and get treated accordingly.

Take care.
